Horizontal closed-loop is the most common and most affordable. Loops of piping go into trenches about five feet deep across your yard. You need roughly 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of open space, which most Breaux Bridge properties outside the historic downtown can accommodate.

Vertical closed-loop is the answer for smaller lots. Bore holes go down 150 to 300 feet, and you only need a few square feet of surface area. The drilling adds cost, but it makes geothermal possible where a horizontal layout wouldn’t fit.
